Roanoke Island NC Rental Guide

Just over the bridge from Nags Head, you’ll find the eight-mile long Roanoke Island, consisting of the quaint towns of Manteo, Skyco, and Wanchese.

This historic area was first settled by the English, under the authority of Sir Walter Raleigh, in 1584. In 1587 more colonists came to establish a settlement. Composed of men, women, and children these 110 settlers would become known as the lost colony. Soon after settling on Roanoke Island in July, Virigina Dare (Aug 18th 1587) was born. She was the first English child born in the New World. Although attempts to resupply the colony failed before the colony was mysteriously lost, this settlement grew in the hearts and minds of English explorers determined to out due Spain, and thrive in a promisingly beautiful new world.

Today, the island’s unique history and charm still bring vacationers from all over. Visit the downtown waterfront area of Manteo for some of the best shopping and dining on the Outer Banks. Take a drive through Skyco to Wanchese and visit the industrial seafood park, where the charter boats bring in the fresh seafood that is served in many of the local restaurants. Roanoke Island offers some of the most famous Outer Banks attractions, including the North Carolina Aquarium, The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama, the Elizabethan Gardens, the representative 16th century ship Elizabeth II and the Waterside Theater located at Roanoke Island Festival Park, and the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
